Huayna Picchu Tickets 2026: How to Get Them, Entry Times, Quotas and Prices

To climb Huayna Picchu you need a specific ticket: Route 3-A (Ruta Montaña Waynapicchu) on Circuit 3, the Royalty Circuit. It is sold only on the official site tuboleto.cultura.pe or, with very few places left, at the Ministry of Culture ticket office in Machupicchu Pueblo. In 2026 there are two time slots, at 7:00 and 10:00, with 400 places a day in total, and a foreign adult pays S/211 (S/200 for the ticket plus S/11 for the SERNANP fee). It is one of the tickets that sells out first at Machu Picchu. In this guide we explain how to buy it, how far in advance to book, which entry times and limits actually apply (official documents contradict each other), what applies on minimum age, and what alternatives you have if tickets are gone.

Which ticket includes Huayna Picchu: Route 3-A and Circuit 3

Since 2024, visits to Machu Picchu are organised into three circuits grouping ten routes, and each ticket matches a single route. Huayna Picchu, whose official spelling is Waynapicchu, is included only on Route 3-A, one of the four routes on Circuit 3:

3-A, Ruta Montaña Waynapicchu: the tour of the royalty sector plus the climb to the summit of Huayna Picchu. It is the only route that reaches the top.
3-B, Designed Route: the same royalty sector, without a mountain.
3-C, Great Cavern: a trail along the slope of Huayna Picchu to the Great Cavern, without passing the summit. High season only.
3-D, Huchuypicchu: a short climb to Huchuy Picchu. High season only.

In practice, the 3-A ticket is a single entry that includes both parts: first you tour the lower part of the llaqta (the Inca city), with the Temple of the Sun, the Twelve Openings, the Eastern Qolqas, the Water Mirrors and the Temple of the Condor, and in the eastern sector you branch off towards the control booth next to the Sacred Rock, where the mountain trail begins. What it does not include is the upper area with the postcard viewpoint or the Plaza of the Temples, which belong to Circuits 1 and 2. If you want both experiences, you need two tickets. How to buy Huayna Picchu tickets step by step

Under RM 000334-2026-MC, published in September 2026, tickets are bought only directly and in the visitor's name, with full payment, on the Tu Boleto platform or at authorised offices of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) of Cusco. Travel agencies registered with DDC Cusco may also buy them, always in each visitor's name.

Go to tuboleto.cultura.pe by typing the address yourself, not through ads.
Choose "Llaqta de Machupicchu", then Circuit 3 and Route 3-A: Ruta Montaña Waynapicchu. Check the code carefully: 3-B and 3-C have similar names and do not reach the summit.
Pick the date and time slot (7:00 or 10:00). You can check availability first at tuboleto.cultura.pe/disponibilidad/llaqta_machupicchu.
Enter each visitor's details exactly as on their passport or ID, with the correct category (general, student or minor).
Pay within the time the platform allows. From 22 September 2026, during the rollout of the new system, the previous three-hour reservation no longer applies: according to the Ministry of Culture, you initially have 15 minutes to pay; if you do not, the place is released.
Download the ticket and save it on your phone and, ideally, print a copy too.

Remember that the ticket is valid only for the date, time, circuit and named holder shown: you cannot change the date or name, and only one correction of the passport number is allowed for an obvious material error. How far in advance should you book?

The Ministry of Culture does not publish a recommended lead time, but the numbers speak for themselves: Huayna Picchu has 400 places a day compared with the 5,600 daily visitors the llaqta admits in high season. Our advice:

High season (in 2026: 1 January, 2 to 5 April, 19 June to 2 November, and 30 and 31 December): buy as soon as your travel dates are fixed. That is when both slots sell out fastest.
Rest of the year: there is more flexibility, but sold-out days still happen. Do not leave it to the last minute.
Buy the ticket first and plan train and hotel around your slot. It is easier to change a train than to find a Huayna Picchu place.
If you are travelling early the following year, note that RM 000334-2026-MC says tickets are bought "in the current annual period". It is unclear how that will apply to purchases for the next year, so check on Tu Boleto from when sales open for your date.

Daily quotas and time slots in 2026

RM 000285-2025-MC and its annex distribute 2026 capacity by routes and schedules. For Route 3-A:

That split is from the high-season annex. In low season the 3-A daily total is also 400 places, but we have not been able to confirm how online and in-person sales are divided on those dates. In-person places are sold at the Machupicchu Pueblo ticket office for entry the following day.

Schedules, time limits and deadlines: what the rules in force say

This is worth reading carefully, because different schedules circulate. These are the rules of RM 528-2023-MC, the regulation in force on visit times, cross-checked with the 2026 capacity annex:

A few clarifications:

Official map vs. regulation. The official Route 3-A map shows a maximum stay of 6 hours, while the regulation says 5 hours 30 minutes. Plan with the shorter figure.
What time your ticket shows. The official entry-times document states that the time on the ticket is entry through the llaqta's main gate. The regulation, however, describes the 7:00 to 7:30 and 10:00 to 10:30 slots as mountain entry times, and it is not entirely clear whether those refer to the gate or the control booth. The prudent approach is to enter through the gate at the exact time on your ticket and go straight to the control booth next to the Sacred Rock.
Great Cavern from the summit. RM 528-2023-MC still mentions visiting the Great Cavern after the summit on the first slot, but in 2026 the Great Cavern is sold as a separate route (3-C). Do not count on combining them with a 3-A ticket.

Why you will see conflicting schedules

If you search for Huayna Picchu information, you may find entry at 6:00 and 9:00, or a table where the second group has until 14:30 on the mountain but must leave the llaqta at 14:00, which is impossible. That schedule comes from the 2024 draft regulations (RM 159-2024-MC), published for comment and contradicting itself: the text sets entry from 6:00 to 6:30 and 9:00 to 9:30, and its table from 7:00 to 7:30 and 10:00 to 10:30. That draft was not approved as law. The rules that apply are RM 528-2023-MC and the 2026 annex sales times (7:00 and 10:00), which match each other. In any case, always confirm the conditions shown on your ticket.

Grace periods, documents and other rules

Grace period at the main gate: 30 minutes after the time on your ticket in regular-demand months and 45 minutes in peak-demand months (between 1 June and 15 October and on 30 and 31 December, according to the official entry-times document published in 2024).
No grace period on the mountain: at the Waynapicchu, Machupicchu and Huchuypicchu mountain controls there is no grace period. Do not use the main-gate margin, or you may be late at the mountain control.
Mandatory registration: you must register at the control point when you enter and leave the mountain.
ID document: you need the ticket and the official document you bought with, in original. For foreigners, a passport, foreign resident card, diplomatic ID or national ID from CAN and MERCOSUR countries are accepted. Students must carry their original valid student card or certificate. Staff may ask for your ticket and document inside the llaqta.
No re-entry: once you leave the llaqta, you cannot go back in on the same ticket, except for force majeure. Toilets are outside, so go before you enter.
Physical condition: the regulations state that alternative routes are voluntary and require good physical condition.
Prohibited items: backpacks or bags larger than 40 x 35 x 20 cm, food, walking sticks, umbrellas, tripods and selfie sticks, heels and hard-soled shoes, among others.
Stay on your route: entering routes you did not select or restricted areas leads to removal from the site.

Route 3-A ticket fares are set in RM 000317-2025-MC, which updated the Ministry of Culture fee schedule. From 1 May 2026 the SERNANP fee for entry to the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu is added: S/11 for foreign visitors. We have not been able to confirm the SERNANP amount for foreign students and minors in an official source, so check when you pay. The schedule also provides a special 50% discount rate "as provided by law" for people aged 60 or over, teachers, voluntary military service members and people with disabilities; do not assume it applies to foreign tourists. Peruvians and Andean Community citizens have their own rates.

Difficulty and summit elevation

The climb to Huayna Picchu is demanding. After passing the control booth next to the Sacred Rock, the trail climbs steep Inca stone stairways, with narrow, exposed sections, and you descend the same way. It is 2.4 km round trip according to the official panel. Not advisable if you suffer from vertigo.

In 2026 the route was closed from 1 to 30 June for conservation work and reopened on 1 July. According to the Ministry of Culture, pre-Hispanic stairways were consolidated, and stairs and new steel-cable handrails were installed on the steepest sections.

On elevation, figures do not agree: most travel guides and operators cite 2,693 m above sea level, others 2,720 m, and some sources give different numbers. We have not found a figure in the Ministry of Culture documents consulted for this guide, so treat them as approximate. What those sources agree on is that the summit sits about 300 metres above the llaqta. We describe the trail section by section in our Huayna Picchu hike guide.

Minimum age: an unresolved issue

Sources do not agree and no regulation in force spells it out fully:

The regulation in force (RM 528-2023-MC) requires good physical condition and registration at the control point for Route 3-A, but does not set a minimum age.
The official fee schedule (RM 000317-2025-MC) includes a minor rate for Route 3-A, which indicates the route is sold to minors.
The 2024 draft regulations (RM 159-2024-MC), which were not approved, proposed requiring visitors to be 18 or older for 3-A and other hiking routes.
Many tour operators say entry is allowed from age 12 with an adult, but they do not cite a regulation that supports it.

If you travel with children, check the condition shown on tuboleto.cultura.pe when you buy, and if in doubt contact DDC Cusco before paying. For young children, Route 3-B or Circuit 2 are more comfortable options.

Is a guide required?

No. Article 17.1 of the regulations, as worded by RM 000334-2026-MC, says entry requires a ticket and an official ID document, and that a tourism guide is "recommended". You can do the route on your own, although an official guide adds a lot of context in the royalty sector. See the other Machu Picchu entry requirements.

If there are no 3-A places left on your date, you have several official options:

A few pointers:

Machu Picchu Mountain (1-A). Under RM 528-2023-MC it has entry windows of 7:00 to 7:30 and 9:00 to 9:30, an average of 4 hours on the mountain, descent from the summit must start by 13:00 at the latest, and the latest return is 14:00. It is longer and also offers views of the llaqta from above.
Huchuy Picchu (3-D) and Great Cavern (3-C). They have very few places, are sold online only and only in high season: for the remainder of 2026, until 2 November and again on 30 and 31 December.
In-person purchase. The Machupicchu Pueblo ticket office reserves 25 3-A places per slot, 50 a day, for entry the following day. They are the first to sell out, so arrive early and treat this as a plan B. We explain it in our buying tickets in person guide.
Check availability again. Unpaid places are released when payment times out, so a slot may appear. Check tuboleto.cultura.pe/disponibilidad/llaqta_machupicchu several times.
Change the date. If your itinerary allows, moving the visit by a day may be easier than any alternative.
Beware of resale. Tickets are nominal and sold only through official channels. A ticket in someone else's name will not work at the control.

Practical tips

Choose the 7:00 slot if you can. The deadline to start back from the summit is 13:00 for both slots, so the first gives you more margin.
Go straight to the mountain control. Between the main gate and the booth next to the Sacred Rock you still have much of the royalty sector to cover, and there is no grace period at that control.
Check the route before you pay. Confirm your ticket says "Ruta 3-A: Ruta Montaña Waynapicchu".
Wear shoes with good grip. The stairways are steep and slippery when wet.
Travel light. Food and backpacks or bags larger than 40 x 35 x 20 cm are not allowed.
Stay in Machupicchu Pueblo the night before if you have the 7:00 slot, so you are not dependent on the first train.
Bring the same document you used to buy. Without it, you may be refused entry.

What if tickets are sold out?: Try Machu Picchu Mountain (Route 1-A), Huchuy Picchu (3-D) or Great Cavern (3-C) in high season, or try for one of the 50 daily in-person places in Machupicchu Pueblo.

In short

For Huayna Picchu you need the Route 3-A ticket on Circuit 3, bought on tuboleto.cultura.pe and costing S/211 for a foreign adult. There are only 400 places a day in two slots, at 7:00 and 10:00, with return from the summit by 13:00 at the latest and no grace period at the mountain control. Buy as soon as you have dates, especially in high season, bring the document you bought with, and if you travel with children, confirm the age condition before you pay.
